According to the Ministry of Health of the country, surgeons in Novosibirsk performed the first operation in Russia on a patient with an anomaly in the development of the cardiovascular system.
NMIC specialists ak. EN Meshalkin from the Ministry of Health of Russia performed advanced surgery on a 58-year-old patient with atrial fibrillation. As a result of a congenital anomaly, the man did not have an upper vena cava, but there was an additional left superior vena cava. The atrial septum consisted of two parts, therefore traditional intervention was not possible.
Surgeons introduced catheters through the femoral artery into the aorta and then through the heart’s aortic valve into the left atrium, where they stopped foci of pathological activity. The intervention was carried out using a robotic navigation system.
In total, five such interventions have been carried out worldwide. This is the first operation in the Russian cardiac surgery practice.
