Russian aviation authorities asked carriers to prepare for flights without GPS.
The corresponding letter was sent by the head of the department, Dmitry Yadrov, to the General Director of the State Air Traffic Management Corporation Igor Moiseenko and the heads of the interregional territorial departments of the agencies, who handed it over to the management of air carriers.
State ATM Corporation has been instructed to assist flight crews in the event of a GPS failure, and pilots should promptly notify dispatchers of anomalies in the operation of the navigation system. The airlines, for their part, need to prepare their flight crews for such a threat.
With GPS turned off, pilots should be able to control the aircraft’s position with traditional navaids, the article notes.
Earlier it was reported that in the United States, the sanction is considering the possibility of disconnecting Russia from GPS navigation systems. The head of the state-owned corporation «Roskosmos», Dmitry Rogozin, said that it is technically very difficult to disconnect Russia from the navigation system, while the domestic GLONASS system will ensure global accuracy of the beacon, reports RIA Novosti.
