Specialists from the Altai Regional Clinical Center for the Protection of Mother and Children became the authors of a new method of surgical treatment of nephroptosis in children.
In the case of nephroptosis, the kidneys prolapse. It occurs quite often in children, more often in girls during puberty. The disease is accompanied by pain, increased pressure, and the outflow of urine may be disturbed due to the bend of the ureter. Nephroptosis is operated on in about one in twenty cases.
The authors were: pediatric surgeons Yuri Ten and Konstantin Ten, ACCCMD deputy chief physician for surgery, traumatologist-orthopedist Arsen Osipov, pediatric urologist-andrologist Karima Frolkova and assistant of the Department of Pediatric Surgery of the ASMU Daria Elkova.
«To keep the kidney in place, surgeons create a «hammock» for it from the nearest muscles, but the kidney can slip out of it and fall again. We take a wider bundle of muscles and build something like a basket out of it, and the kidney no longer moves. We operated on 86 patients in this way, none of them had a recurrence of the disease. We operate on about 7-10 such patients a year, including those after multiple kidney descents,” said pediatric surgeon Yuriy Ten about the features of the method.
